Amanda
Some people pass through a difficult chapter with you, and somehow they leave a little light behind.
I met Amanda here at Progressive, inside these fences, during a time when both of us were working through our own lives, our own stories, and our own reasons for being here. Detox is not exactly the place anyone expects to find beauty, laughter, friendship, or tenderness — but life has a way of surprising us.
Amanda became my friend.
She has a gentle spirit, a bright smile, and the kind of presence that makes a hard place feel a little softer. We talked, laughed, shared pieces of ourselves, and for a little while, this place felt less lonely because she was here too.
I’ll be honest and say there was a sweetness between us that made me wonder what might have happened if we had met somewhere else — outside the walls, outside the rules, outside this strange little pause in life called recovery. Maybe we might have become more than friends. Maybe not. Life does not always give us the full story at once.
But I do know this: I am grateful I met her.
Amanda, if you read this, please know I mean every word with respect and kindness. You made a difference in my time here. You reminded me that even in a hard season, friendship can still show up. Warmth can still show up. Hope can still walk through the door wearing a denim jacket and a smile.
I hope I see you again outside these fences.
And wherever life takes you, I hope it is gentle with you.
