BluPilot began after Jim Hamilton’s Fourth of July trike accident forced him into the world of walkers, wheelchairs, surgery, skilled nursing, and the daily negotiation required to cross a room safely.

The first mission is not another scooter. It is an electric rollator: a quiet walking companion for people who still want to walk but need intelligent assistance.

The origin

A question that would not go away

Jim spent years supervising one of the largest paratransit operations in the Seattle area. He watched seniors and people with disabilities fight to preserve the independence that other people barely notice.

At nearly eighty, he became the passenger, the patient, and the person who could not stand without help. That reversal made the design failure impossible to ignore: mobility products too often force people to choose between walking without enough support and surrendering walking altogether.

An electric rollator—not a replacement for walking

Assist the person. Do not take the person out of the process.

The product concept starts with a stable rollator frame and adds only the technology that makes walking safer, steadier, and more practical.

Gentle powered help on slopes or long corridors, delivered without jerking, racing, or pulling the user out of balance.

Automatic safety

Braking and speed control designed around falls, runaway descents, uneven surfaces, doorway transitions, and real indoor use.

A real seat

A comfortable place to rest, with a supportive backrest and a frame that remains useful when the user is standing or seated.

Simple controls

A clear interface that helps rather than intimidates, including voice guidance and a screen positioned where the user can actually see it.

Battery life for a full day of ordinary life, with straightforward charging and a foldable or transportable design.

Technology that looks deliberate, modern, and worth owning—not equipment designed to remind someone of decline.

Build in public

Every useful idea should be visible before the product is finished.

  1. Publish the problem.Document what people struggle with in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, sidewalks, homes, and transportation systems.
  2. Invite the right voices.Bring engineers, therapists, nurses, caregivers, riders, residents, and families into the same design conversation.
  3. Show the work.Share sketches, prototypes, tests, failures, revisions, and safety questions instead of hiding the process behind marketing.
  4. Test with real users.Measure whether the product helps someone stand, walk, turn, stop, rest, recover, and remain confident.

Jim has programmed since 1969, supervised paratransit operations, built BluSup as an AI-assisted publishing platform, and is now living the mobility problem from the inside.
