Maybe Now We Can Connect

New start

My granddaughter Shelby gave me my daughter Becky’s phone number today. I’m very grateful. I’ve asked for it before.

So I sent Becky a text.

I apologized for the things that have happened between us. I bear full responsibility because, at the time, I was supposed to be the adult in the room.

The truth is that bailing on my daughter was the worst thing I have ever done—to her, to myself, or to anyone.

I lost contact with Becky as she went on with her life and had children of her own. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have contact with a few of my grandchildren, and I’m deeply grateful for that.

Shelby most of all.

She rescued me from what had become a suicide attempt by alcohol up in Tennessee. I would not be alive today without her.

It’s all her fault.

Thank you, girl.

Apparently, Becky has already sent me a text. I haven’t read it yet. I’m not sure what I’m afraid of, because I would truly love to know how she feels.

Maybe now that I have her number, and she has mine, we can begin to connect again.

I hope so.
