What a Ten Really Means

New start

I just learned that my insurance runs out Sunday, and I’ll be going home on Monday.

That puts a new frame around everything. I’ve got two days left here at Pillars, and I’ve been working hard to get ready. My upper body strength is way up, and I feel confident I’ll be able to get around. A new chair is supposed to be delivered to my residence before I get there, so the pieces are starting to come together.

I also learned something yesterday about that question they always ask:

“How’s your pain level on a scale of one to ten?”

Yesterday, I found out what ten really means.

It’s one thing to hear the scale. It’s another thing entirely to live it. I understand that question in a whole new way now.

Through all of this, I want to give real credit where it’s due. Pillars has been great to me. The staff here have helped me through a rough stretch, and I appreciate them very much. The medical facilities and teams that have now operated on my ankle twice also deserve my thanks. This has not been an easy road, but I’ve been cared for by good people.

So now the countdown is on. Two days left here, then home Monday, and on to the next stage of recovery.

And one more honest note for my longtime friend Beryl in Hawaii: you said I was looking great in that blog picture, and I have to confess — that image was generated for me by AI. But I’ll still take the compliment gladly.

Onward.
