From a Hospital Bed to a New Mobility Idea: Introducing BluPilot:
I’m writing this flat on my back in a hospital bed, with a badly broken ankle, a head full of ideas, and a very clear understanding of something I wish I did not have to learn this way:
When you lose the ability to walk, even temporarily, the world changes fast.
Suddenly, everything becomes harder. Getting to the bathroom. Getting a drink of water. Crossing a room. Moving safely through a doorway. Going outside. Reaching a sidewalk. Living like yourself.
There are things I could be doing right now if I was able to walk, but I can’t. And while lying here, looking at walkers, rollators, scooters, and my own experience with mobility equipment, I’ve been thinking hard about the gap that exists between them.
That gap may be the beginning of a new product.
Introducing BluPilot
BluPilot is my concept for a new kind of personal mobility device:
an AI-guided seated mobility walker designed to help people move more safely, comfortably, and confidently through both indoor and outdoor environments.
This is not meant to be just another mobility scooter.
And it is not meant to be just another rollator walker.
It is meant to be something in between — and beyond.
BluPilot would combine the best ideas from existing mobility equipment with a smarter, more supportive design built for real people facing real mobility challenges.
Why this idea matters
I know something about transportation and mobility.
Years ago, I served as the lead supervisor for one of the largest paratransit operations in Seattle. I’ve spent time thinking about what people need in order to move safely and maintain dignity. I’ve seen older riders, disabled riders, and people with limited mobility trying to navigate a world that often seems built for everyone except them.
Now, at almost eighty years old, I find myself in that picture too.
After a recent crash on my electric trike, I’ve had to experience firsthand what happens when independence disappears overnight. Crutches are not always practical. Standard walkers can be exhausting. Rollators help, but only to a point. Scooters solve a different problem, but they don’t fully address the moment-to-moment hazards of everyday movement.
That is where BluPilot comes in.
The concept
BluPilot would be a stable four-wheel seated mobility platform with a rider-focused control system and a prominent AI screen placed directly where the rider can see and use it.
The screen would become the rider’s control world.
It could eventually display things like:
upcoming hazards
uneven sidewalks
curbs and drop-offs
holes or obstacles in the path
rugs, furniture, pets, or people indoors
battery, speed, and route status
voice prompts and warnings
safe-driving assistance
In other words, BluPilot would not just move the rider.
It would help protect the rider.
The design direction
The current concept image points toward something important:
a comfortable padded seat
a supportive backrest
a strong stable frame
a smart rider-facing display
easy controls
a design that feels more advanced, more personal, and more reassuring than traditional mobility devices
This matters because so many mobility products feel clinical, mechanical, or limited in imagination. People deserve something better.
They deserve equipment that says:
You still matter.
You still move.
You still have control.
Built from real-world need
One of the strongest things about this concept is that it is not coming out of a corporate conference room.
It is coming out of real life.
I am currently the exact kind of user who can speak honestly about what works, what doesn’t, and what is missing. I can serve as the first real-world voice behind the product, the first real user, and eventually the first real tester.
I can evaluate:
entry and exit ease
comfort over time
indoor usability
turning and doorway clearance
sidewalk stability
control placement
screen usefulness
braking confidence
hazard warning value
the emotional experience of using it
That kind of feedback is hard to fake, and it can be invaluable in creating a product that truly serves people.
Using what already exists
Another strength of this idea is that it does not have to begin from scratch.
There is already excellent mobility equipment in the world. There are good frames, drive systems, seats, steering ideas, power systems, and structural components that could be studied, adapted, or combined into an early prototype.
A first BluPilot unit could begin as a practical development build — using existing equipment, modified hardware, and a newly designed control layout — then evolve into a more refined platform.
That means the path forward could be:
Concept and design
Prototype using existing equipment and adapted components
Initial real-user testing
Engineering improvements
A more polished production-ready unit
This is exactly the kind of process that could turn a good idea into a meaningful product.
Why I’m reaching out to Lectric
I’m sending this idea first to Lectric because they already understand electric mobility, practical design, affordability, and a growing user base that values independence.
I believe a company like Lectric could be the right place to explore whether BluPilot can move from concept to prototype.
What I’m proposing is not just a device.
It’s a new category opportunity.
A product for older adults.
A product for people recovering from injury.
A product for people with balance or endurance issues.
A product for people who are not ready to give up movement, freedom, or dignity.
My offer
I’m not just pitching an idea from the sidelines.
I’m willing to help shape it.

I can talk about what it feels like to need this.

The larger vision
I believe BluPilot could become more than a single product.
It could become the start of a broader effort to rethink mobility for people who live in the space between walking independently and giving up independence altogether.
That is a large and growing group of people.
And too many of them have been overlooked.
If this idea goes anywhere, I would love to document the process openly — the thinking, the engineering, the setbacks, the wins, and the evolution of the product — so others can see what it takes to create something that truly helps.
Final thoughts
This idea was born in a rough moment.
A crash.
A broken ankle.
A hospital bed.
A forced pause.
But sometimes the best ideas arrive when life strips things down and makes the problem impossible to ignore.
Right now, I can’t walk.
But I can still think.
I can still imagine.
And I can still help build something that may improve life for a lot of people.
That something might be BluPilot.
And I believe it deserves a serious look.
