The nice folks here at Pillars have heard that I’m scheduled to leave next Monday, July 27, and they’re a little concerned.
Considering that I’m still carrying around a wound-suction device that is actively removing fluid from beneath the bandage on my right ankle, they may have a point. This last surgery took the titanium rods out of my leg and ankle, but the healing is far from finished.
The social worker here—who is also helping me get a wheelchair—suggested that I appeal the insurance decision and ask for a little more recovery time.
There really isn’t much to lose.
The worst that can happen is that insurance says no, and I leave Pillars on Monday as already planned. The best that can happen is that they approve another week, giving my ankle more time to heal while I’m surrounded by people who know how to care for it.
She also explained something important: even if the extension is approved, I’m not trapped here. I can still leave Pillars whenever I decide I’m ready.
My roommate dropped by this morning to check on me. Our home is only about a mile from here, and we are in complete agreement that I’ll be coming home soon, continuing to live there, and paying my part of the rent.
Home is waiting for me.
The social worker brought the insurance phone number into my room today. I called while she stayed with me, and together we filed the request for an extension. My case will now be reviewed, and the insurance company will call when they have made their decision.
If they say no, I’ll go home Monday.
If they say yes, I’ll probably stay until the following Saturday, August 1—one week from today.
I’m anxious to get home, but I’m open to whatever happens. The wound-care lady here has become a friend, and another week with her keeping a close eye on this ankle would not be a bad thing at all.
So now I wait for the phone call.
Either way, I’m moving forward.
Either Monday or Saturday, I’ll be going home.
